Welcome Speech of Residential College Master for 2017 Freshmen

On 17th September, the inauguration ceremonyof Residential College for new residents was held in the Auditorium hall of Teaching & Learning Building A. Master Lap-Chee Tsui, deputy master Yufen Wang, tutors, counselors, support team of Residential College, and about 300 freshmen from 46 countries gathered at the ceremony.

The inaugural ceremony started with a brief presentation on the structure and staff of Residential College.After then, Master Lap-Chee Tsui began his welcome speech.

First of all, Lap-Chee congratulated the students on joining the family of Zhejiang University and Residential College of International Campus. He talked about “the concept of whole-person education”, “the role of Residential College in students’ education” and “advice on how to adopt college life”. Lap-Chee mentioned that whole-person education is not about the curriculum. Instead, it is about experiential learning, about service learning, possibly about exchange study abroad, and it is about student-led activities. Here at the international campus, students are excepted to be future leaders with national passion, international vision and global competitiveness. Specific knowledge of the academic or professional subject matters, the ability to perform critical thinking, the habit of life-long learning, and proper set of values are attached great importance if students are to be favored in work market. As nature and nurture play a balancing role in students future success, Residential College is committed to be a platform for multidisciplinary education, knowledge exchange and cultural interaction. It also provides an environment conducive to teaching and learning, with active mentorship, academic advising and experiential internship. Lap-Chee suggested the freshmen: change the study attitude and method, form small study groups and cultivate good learning habits; try to learn from sharing, embrace diversity and difference; participate in as many activities in the College as possible if time is not a bothering issue and remember to contribute and serve.

The Q&A session was in a warm atmosphere as Lap-Chee answered several questions from students. After the inauguration ceremony, some freshmen stayed to discuss with Lap-Chee about the development of professional research projects.
